Tunnel Vision

Eye diseases that can cause constricted visual fields ("tunnel vision") include glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). In the early stages of these diseases, the visual acuity is often not affected, only the visual field (Item # 104).

Did you know...?

  • Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the US and is the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans.4
  • RP is characterized by progressive visual field loss and night blindness. Its occurrence is reported to be between 1 in 2,000 and 1 in 7,000 and is more common in males.5
  • In the US, one definition of "legal blindness" is a visual field no greater than 20°. Item #104 portrays this maximum level of visual field allowed in determining this status.
